No-exam life insurance

How to qualify for a quick decision, what accelerated underwriting looks like, and alternatives if you don't meet the criteria.

Today, many insurers offer expedited underwriting: they issue decisions in hours or days for applicants within their age and benefit parameters, using your application, pharmacy data, motor vehicle records and other facts without requiring an in-person exam. Each rate shown on this site notes exam requirements for that particular plan.

What it changes

Expedited processes don't bypass verification. All responses are cross-checked, and policies issued due to incorrect information can be rescinded in year one or two. Should verification uncover issues, the carrier may still require an exam or testing, and you choose whether to move forward.

Who tends to qualify

Generally, people under 60 with coverage goals within the carrier's streamlined limit, with no serious medical history, and without tobacco use in 12+ months are eligible. Several carriers will use recent medical records (from your physician) in place of scheduling a fresh exam.

If you do need an exam, it is typically a 20- to 30-minute appointment with a paramedical examiner at your home or office in Riverside, provided at no charge to you. The results sometimes lead to a better rate class for healthy applicants, so an exam is not necessarily disadvantageous.
